16Mn steel is a carbon-manganese steel with a carbon content of about 0.16% and a yield point equal to 343 MPa (strength level is 343 MPa). 16Mn steel has a small alloy content and good weldability, and generally does not need to be preheated before welding. However, since the hardening tendency of 16Mn steel is slightly larger than that of low carbon steel, preheating measures are required to prevent cold cracking at low temperatures (such as open-air operation in winter) or when welding on large-rigid, large-thickness structures.
Preheating temperature of 16Mn steel under different thicknesses and different ambient temperatures:

16 or more is not lower than -10 °C without preheating, preheating below -10 °C 100 ~ 150 °C;
16～24 Not lower than -5°C, no preheating, preheating below 100°C to 150°C under -5°C;
25～40 Not lower than 0°C, no preheating, preheating below 0°C, 100～150°C;
40 or more are preheated at 100 to 150 °C.
For the hand arc welding of 16Mn steel, E50 type welding rods, such as alkaline welding rods E5015 and E5016, should be used. For the unimportant structure, acid welding rods E5003 and E5001 can also be used. For weldments with small thickness and narrow groove, E4315 and E4316 electrodes can be used.
In the submerged arc welding of 16Mn steel, H08MnA welding wire is matched with flux HJ431 (opening I-shaped groove butt joint) or H10Mn2 welding wire is matched with flux HJ431 (middle plate groove opening butt joint). When welding thick plate deep groove weld, H08MnMoA welding wire should be used. With flux HJ431.
16Mn steel is currently the most widely used low alloy steel in China. The 16Mn steel used for the welded structure is 16MnR and 16Mng steel.
