Water Absorption and Stain Resistance Define Tile Antifouling Performance

According to experts from the National Building Ceramics Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the lower the water absorption rate of ceramic tiles made from the same material and process, the higher the firing temperature required. This leads to better physical and chemical properties, which in turn enhance the tile’s antifouling performance.

Ceramic tiles with a water absorption rate below 0.5% are known as vitrified tiles. Polished tiles also fall into this category since their water absorption is similarly low. The difference is that polished tiles are created by polishing the surface of vitrified tiles to achieve a glossy finish. Glazed tiles, on the other hand, have a glass-like layer on the surface, making them highly resistant to water and stains. In contrast, polished tiles have micro-pores on their surface, making them more prone to absorbing dirt and contaminants. To counter this, they are often coated with an anti-stain agent to fill the pores and protect the surface.

When it comes to stain resistance, the national standard only classifies glazed tiles into five grades, but there are no clear guidelines for non-glazed tiles. Testing involves applying common stains like ink, tea, or marker pens to the tile surface and then cleaning them using various agents such as bleach, washing powder, acetone, hydrochloric acid, or potassium hydroxide. The easier it is to remove the stain, the better the antifouling performance of the tile.

Polished Tiles Are Not Invincible

Polished tiles are popular due to their smooth, shiny appearance, good stain resistance, wear resistance, and ease of maintenance. However, in real-life use, they can become dull over time and may be difficult to clean, especially if exposed to ink or paint during renovation.

Experts from a provincial decoration materials quality inspection station explained that while the national standard does not clearly define the stain resistance of unglazed tiles, the quality of polished tiles varies significantly in the market. Even though many products have a low water absorption rate, their stain resistance can still differ greatly. Factors like pore structure, distribution, and connectivity also play a role. Recent sampling has shown that some polished tiles do not meet standards, with water absorption rates exceeding 0.5%. These tiles can easily stain even with careful maintenance. Additionally, even high-quality polished tiles can be damaged by sharp objects or cement residue.

Proper Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

1. Grease in the kitchen can be tough to remove. After wiping with detergent, you can apply a cloth soaked in cleaning solution directly onto the tile and let it sit for 3–5 hours. This helps loosen the grease, making it easier to wipe away.

2. For rust near the faucet, mix vitamin C powder with water or add lemon juice to create a paste. Rub it gently, and if any residue remains, use a scraper. The same method works for bathroom rust.

3. High humidity in the bathroom can lead to mold or mildew between tiles. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean the grout regularly. If left too long, the stains can seep into the edges and become hard to remove.

4. In the living room, heavy objects dropped on the floor can cause cracks. Use tile-specific adhesive to fill small gaps and repair minor damage.

5. Over time, tiles may lose their shine. Instead of replacing them entirely, consider re-glazing the surface for a fresh look. Many renovation companies offer this service.
