Water Absorption and Stain Resistance Define Tile Antifouling Performance

According to experts from the National Building Ceramics Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the lower the water absorption rate of ceramic tiles made from the same material and process, the higher the firing temperature required, which results in better physical and chemical properties and stronger anti-fouling performance.

Tiles with a water absorption rate below 0.5% are known as vitrified tiles. Polished tiles also fall into this category, as their water absorption is similarly low. The difference is that polished tiles are simply vitrified tiles that have been smoothed and polished to a mirror finish. In contrast, glazed tiles have a glass-like surface layer that prevents water and dirt from penetrating. However, polished tiles have tiny pores on their surface, making them more prone to staining. To counter this, they are often treated with an anti-stain coating to seal the pores and protect against contamination.

When it comes to stain resistance, the national standard only categorizes glazed tiles into five grades, but there's no specific requirement for non-glazed tiles. Anti-fouling performance is tested by applying common contaminants like ink, tea, or marker pens to the tile surface. After a set period, the stains are cleaned using various agents such as bleach, washing powder, acetone, hydrochloric acid, or potassium hydroxide. The easier it is to remove the stain, the better the tile’s anti-fouling performance.

Polished Tiles Are Not Invincible

In the ceramics market, polished tiles are popular due to their smooth, shiny surface, good stain resistance, durability, and ease of maintenance. Many homeowners choose them for flooring. However, in real-life use, these tiles can sometimes appear dull and difficult to clean, especially after pencil marks or other stains during renovation.

Experts from a provincial decoration material quality inspection station explain that while polished tiles may meet water absorption standards, their stain resistance varies significantly. This depends not only on the closed porosity but also on factors like pore structure, size, and distribution. Recent inspections have shown that some polished tiles do not meet quality requirements, with water absorption rates exceeding 0.5%. Using such tiles at home can lead to discoloration even with careful maintenance. Additionally, even high-quality polished tiles can be damaged by sharp objects or cement residue.

How to Clean and Maintain Your Tiles

1. Grease in the kitchen can be tough to clean. After wiping with detergent, residue might still remain. Try placing a paper towel soaked in cleaning solution on the tile for 3–5 hours. The grease will loosen and be easy to wipe away.

2. Rust near the faucet can be removed using crushed vitamin C tablets mixed with water or lemon juice. If any rust remains, a scraper can help remove it. This method works well for bathroom rust too.

3. High humidity in the bathroom often causes black and blue mold between tiles. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to scrub the grout regularly. Leaving it too long makes it hard to remove and may damage the tile edges.

4. The living room floor may get cracked if heavy objects fall on it. Use tile-specific latex to fill small cracks and repair damaged areas.

5. Over time, tiles may lose their shine. Instead of replacing them, many renovation companies offer re-glazing services to restore the look of your tiles.
