Fungi hidden in the dishwasher often pose a risk to humans

According to Xinhua News Agency, the British Mycological Society published a research report in its journal "Fungal Biology" on the 21st, saying that researchers found two previously unfamiliar fungi in the dishwasher. These two fungi are very rare in nature, they only love the humid and high temperature environment in the dishwasher, and they are not afraid of disinfectants.

The researchers sampled and tested in the dishwashers of 189 households in 101 cities on six continents, and found that the melanin yeast called "Exoderma dermatitis" and the fungus named "Exophiala Phaeomuriformis"

Among them, 65% of household dishwashers have these two fungi at the suction adhesive strip of the dishwasher door.

The study reports that these two fungi "can pose a risk to the human body and can parasitize the lungs of patients, causing alveolar fibrosis."

The researchers believe that the unique small environment of high temperature and humidity in the dishwasher is an important reason for their ubiquitous presence in the dishwasher. The report says that household dishwasher disinfectants do not have a killing effect on them, and that they can multiply in salt water, acidic liquid, and alkaline liquid environments.
