Classification of lifting machinery

Hoisting machinery is categorized into different types based on their structure, including light and small lifting equipment, elevators, cranes, and overhead monorail systems. Light and small lifting equipment typically includes items like pulleys, spreaders, jacks, manual hoists, electric hoists, and conventional winches. These devices are generally compact, lightweight, and user-friendly. Most of them rely on human power, making them ideal for light-duty tasks. However, they can also serve as part of the lifting system in larger cranes or be used independently when needed. Some models, such as hydraulic truck cranes, can lift very heavy loads—up to 750 tons in certain cases.

Elevators, on the other hand, are designed for vertical or nearly vertical movement along a fixed path. They are commonly used in buildings, mines, and industrial settings. Lifting platforms and hopper elevators also fall into this category, providing efficient vertical transport solutions.

Cranes are more complex machines that combine multiple functions. They can lift and move heavy objects both vertically and horizontally within a defined area. This makes them essential in construction, manufacturing, and logistics. Overhead monorail systems, by contrast, use rigid rails suspended from the ceiling to transport materials throughout a facility or even outside it. These systems are highly efficient for continuous material handling in large production environments.

While each type of hoisting equipment has its own unique design and application, they all share a basic lifting mechanism that enables vertical movement. In addition to this, many systems include auxiliary mechanisms such as an operating system, luffing mechanism, or slewing mechanism, depending on their function. The lifting action can be achieved using flexible components like wire ropes or chains, or through rigid elements like screws or hydraulic cylinders. This variety allows for a wide range of applications across industries.
