Japan's Prince Holding Corporation has established a technology to make furfural from the hemicellulose that is produced when dissolving wood pulp is produced (see picture). The company plans to use the equipment in the Yonago mill's Yonago plant (Yoko, Tottori prefecture, Japan) for commercial production. Samples will be provided and trial sales will begin in April 2016.
Oji makes wood pulp in a continuous manner using wood chips. In the process of increasing the purity of the dissolving pulp, the hemicellulose will be removed. At present, furfural is extracted by continuous extraction of these hemicelluloses using a pilot plant. The furfural obtained by this process has a purity of 98.5 to 99.0%, a moisture content of 0.013 to 0.200%, an initial boiling point of 150.0 to 156.0%, and an end boiling point of 162.5 to 170.0%.
Furfural is used as a solvent for refining oils and lubricants. In addition, the industry has recently begun to study the use of furfural to produce general-purpose chemical products such as polyurethane and polyethylene terephthalate and bioplastics. In the industry's expectation of replacing fossil raw materials with biological raw materials, furfural has become a material of great concern. (Reporter: Matsuda Chiho)
