Researchers at Lancaster University in the UK are collaborating with the local NanoSUN company to develop new materials for hydrogen purification technology for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. This research project aims to develop new purifiers that will help accelerate the conversion The conversion of fuel to cleaner hydrogen fuel.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are currently the most promising fuel cells, but they are very sensitive to small concentrations of gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulfide, which can damage the catalyst of the fuel cell. It is generally necessary to install a purifier at the position of the hydrogen filling channel to remove impurities in the hydrogen.
The project will design a purifier based on advanced materials to remove these pollutants at low cost. The three-year research project was supported by more than £ 277,000 in knowledge transfer partnership (funded by British Innovate). Lancaster University has strong expertise in hydrogen purification and analysis. They will collaborate with NanoSUN to improve on-board hydrogen purifiers, reduce the cost of fuel cell vehicles, accelerate the transition to cleaner fuel and improve air quality.
