Unlimited recyclable plastic comes out and can be reconstituted into high-quality products

According to the British "New Scientist" weekly website report on August 19, the study found that a new type of plastic can be easily broken down into chemical blocks and then recombined into high-quality products, thereby reducing the amount of plastic waste that is eventually landfilled. The world produces more than 300 million tons of plastic each year, of which only a small part is recycled. One reason for such a low percentage of plastic recycling is that it is difficult to decompose, and the processing processes commonly used to modify old plastics weaken their chemical structure.

To solve this problem, Eugene Chen of Colorado State University in the United States and his colleagues developed a plastic that can maintain its original quality during the recycling process.

According to reports, to make this material called PBTL, it is necessary to combine chemical building blocks called bicyclic thiolactones. Chen said that PBTL has good strength, toughness and stability, which means it may be used to produce plastic packaging, sports equipment, auto parts, construction materials and other products.

The researchers found that under the action of a chemical catalyst, heating at a high temperature of 100 degrees Celsius for 24 hours can easily recycle PBTL. This process can completely decompose the plastic into the original chemical building blocks, which can then be reconstituted into a new high-quality PBTL.

The problem is that PBTL can only be broken down and reorganized in this way if it exists alone. This means that it needs to be separated from other types of plastic in mixed plastic waste before it can be recycled.
