Photovoltaic power generation is a versatile technology that can be applied in various settings, from space missions to everyday household use. It ranges from large-scale power stations to small devices like toys and calculators. At its core, photovoltaic systems rely on solar cells made from materials such as monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, and thin-film batteries. Among these, monocrystalline and polycrystalline cells are the most commonly used due to their higher efficiency. Amorphous silicon, while less efficient, is often used in smaller applications like portable chargers or calculator power sources.
Currently, polycrystalline silicon cells have an efficiency of around 16% to 17%, while monocrystalline silicon cells achieve 18% to 20%. A group of one or more solar cells connected together forms a photovoltaic module or panel. These panels are the building blocks of solar power systems and are used in three main areas: providing electricity in remote or off-grid locations, powering consumer electronics like solar chargers, street lights, and garden lights, and supporting renewable energy initiatives in developed countries.
Although grid-connected solar power was not widely adopted in China until after 2009, some parts of the 2008 Beijing Olympics were powered by solar and wind energy, marking an early step toward sustainable energy solutions. As technology continues to advance, photovoltaic systems are becoming more efficient, affordable, and integrated into daily life around the world.
