The stable development of the shipbuilding industry is conducive to machine tool orders

Shipbuilding involves a wide range of standard components, many of which require specialized machinery for production. This highlights the structured nature of the shipbuilding industry and the critical role played by machine tool manufacturers in supporting it. Rockwell Automation recently secured a $6.7 million contract from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to provide an integrated safety solution for Transocean, a leading offshore drilling services provider. The deal includes the delivery of four drilling vessels, with an option to build six more. This follows a similar $6 million order from DSME in 2011 for the development of four new offshore drilling vessels. Rockwell will supply AADvance process safety systems as part of its PlantPAx integrated control, power, and safety solutions, leveraging its expertise in large-scale project management. According to DSME, Rockwell’s comprehensive offshore solutions offer a reliable system that enhances both operational availability and safety for offshore applications like drilling vessels and platforms. A DSME spokesperson stated that Rockwell’s experience in designing and delivering automation systems for the offshore drilling sector would ensure the successful execution of the Transocean project, including integrated information, control, power, and safety systems. Terry Gebert, Vice President and General Manager of Rockwell Automation’s Global Solutions, emphasized the significance of this order, noting it demonstrates the company’s capability to deliver control and safety solutions for offshore vessels and rigs. He added that Rockwell’s deep industry knowledge and global engineering resources will support DSME and Transocean in achieving efficient, safe, and sustainable operations. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in early 2014, with key solutions for the first unit completed by June 2014. The remaining three vessels are scheduled to have their major systems finalized by October 2015. In another development, Haimen City is actively expanding its shipbuilding and offshore equipment industries by utilizing its coastal and port resources. Yanda Heavy Industry, one of the city's first major projects, has invested 1.5 billion yuan in producing industrial modular devices, pressure vessels, chemical equipment, and power plant auxiliary systems. The project, started in 2011, is now fully operational in its first phase and is progressing with the second phase. Haimen is also developing its ship machinery industry along the Yangtze River shoreline. Several major projects, including a provincial heavy equipment manufacturing park, a Hong Kong-funded offshore ship repair base, and investments from COSCO Heavy Industry and Kehai Equipment, are under construction. Additionally, the China Merchants Offshore Equipment Project, signed last year with a total investment of $65 million, has already secured a sales contract worth nearly $2 billion. As these projects come online, Haimen’s mechanical shipbuilding and offshore equipment sectors are set to grow rapidly, becoming a key driver of the city’s industrial transformation.
