Waste plastics contribute to environmental protection Transforming islands to improve local ecosystems

The growing pollution of Atlantic plastics is a wake-up call to people. Recently, a new R&D project said that it is hopeful that these plastic products will be recycled and that they can contribute to the local ecosystem. Artificially floating islands made from these waste plastics were reprocessed, some papyrus was planted and then used to help rebuild the ecosystem of Lake Naivasha in Africa.

This lake is located in the Grand Canyon of Kenya and was quite clear 30 years ago. Since the sudden increase of the local population, a large number of buffaloes originating in the area have caused a large amount of papyrus to disappear. The papyrus is a very important aquatic plant in the local ecosystem. At present, there is still a small amount of papyrus in the remaining area. The following figure shows only one Papyrus island in the area.

The research team was mainly sponsored by Germany's REWE Group and cooperated with British tea trader and florist Finlays, led by Dr. David Harper of the University of Leicester, UK.
