Analysis of the Reasons for the Multilayer Practice of the Rigid Waterproof Layer of Cement Mortar

The five-layer cement mortar waterproofing system is an effective method used to prevent water penetration in construction. Each layer has a specific role, and together they form a strong, cohesive waterproof barrier that adheres well to the base surface. This method is particularly useful for areas where moisture resistance is critical.

The first layer, known as the ash layer, serves as both a bonding agent and a preliminary waterproof layer. It is applied multiple times to fill the pores on the base surface, improving adhesion between the base and the following layers. This step enhances the overall integrity of the waterproof system.

The second layer is made of cement mortar and is applied before the first layer fully sets. This ensures a strong bond between the two layers, forming a structural skeleton that supports the entire waterproof system. It also helps protect the first layer while allowing the cement to fully hydrate and crystallize, which increases its impermeability.

The third layer is another ash layer, primarily responsible for waterproofing. It is applied onto a rough and moist cement mortar surface, allowing for better hydration of the cement. As a result, the crystals become denser, cracks are minimized, and the capillary network within the waterproof layer is disrupted, significantly improving its water resistance.

The fourth layer is a cement mortar layer that acts as both a protective and structural component. It is applied before the third layer fully hardens, ensuring a tight bond with the previous layers. This step enhances the density and compaction of the entire system, reinforcing the waterproof structure.

The fifth and final layer is a cement slurry coating applied over the fourth layer. It smooths the surface, seals any remaining pores, and further improves the waterproofing performance. Together, the five layers work in coordination to resist water penetration, making this a rigid waterproofing solution. However, due to its rigidity, it may not be suitable for all applications, especially those subject to constant movement or stress.
