Egg-shaped ecological house
When the water rises, the house can float up without worrying about being flooded
In a unique initiative by BMT Asia Pacific, architects and designers have taken an innovative approach to sustainable living by creating floating homes inspired by nature. Using recycled materials, they developed a range of structures including houseboats, floating huts, and beach houses. The project initially aimed to construct a dome for a new landmark cruise terminal in Hong Kong, but after extensive research, the team chose to repurpose the concept into something more functional and eco-friendly.
The design began with an egg-shaped floating hut, taking inspiration from the natural strength and efficiency of the egg’s form. The team pushed the idea further, evolving it into a full-scale houseboat. This modern floating residence features a "split" design, where the top shell is lifted and transformed into a curved terracotta roof, giving the structure a unique, flowing aesthetic. Inside, the mezzanine level leads to a master bedroom, offering panoramic views through large floor-to-ceiling windows that blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment.
According to a company representative, "This luxurious space is designed as a home on the edge of a lake or river, or as part of a larger hotel or studio development. With advanced insulation, temperature control, and the ability to install solar panels on the roof, this design is adaptable to various climates, making it a truly sustainable living solution."
The project represents a bold step towards eco-conscious architecture, combining aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsibility in a way that could redefine how we think about future living spaces. Whether used as a private retreat or a commercial property, these floating homes offer a glimpse into a more sustainable and flexible way of life.
