Fluorescent solar concentrator is a relatively simple large-area solar energy capture device, consisting of luminophores coated or embedded in a transparent substrate. The luminophore emits photons after absorbing the solar photons hitting the board. Due to the difference between the refractive index of the substrate and the air, about 75% of the photons will generate a total reflection mode, which is then guided to the edge of the board to excite the sticking to the edge Solar Cells. If the concentrating efficiency is high enough, a fluorescent solar concentrator and a small number of solar cells at the edge can be functionally equivalent to a whole large area of ​​solar cells, which will greatly reduce the cost of photovoltaic production capacity. The traditional fluorescent solar concentrators are limited by the lower luminophore fluorescence efficiency and self-absorption loss, which results in the internal optical efficiency of the device is generally less than 60%.

Quantum clipping is a novel optical phenomenon. Materials based on this effect can absorb one high-energy photon and simultaneously release two low-energy photons, satisfying the basic physical laws of energy conservation. The research team creatively proposed a fluorescent solar concentrator based on the quantum clipping effect, which can theoretically double the fluorescence quantum efficiency and completely suppress self-absorption losses. Therefore, the internal optical efficiency of the solar concentrator can redefine a new theoretical limit-150%.

Based on this concept, the research team synthesized a rare-earth metal ytterbium-doped nanocrystalline material that exhibits typical quantum tailoring characteristics, and used such nanocrystals to prepare a prototype quantum-cut fluorescent solar concentrator panel, achieving about 120% Optical efficiency inside the device. The study first proposed the concept of "quantum tailored solar concentrator", which has broad application prospects in reducing photovoltaic costs and realizing smart buildings.
