The reporter recently uncovered that the Guilin Fire Brigade has taken action against a dealership selling counterfeit and substandard fire-fighting equipment, seizing goods valued at approximately 1.5 million yuan. Some of these unqualified products have already entered the market, prompting the fire department to collaborate with local public security authorities in an effort to track their distribution and eliminate potential hazards.
During a fire safety inspection in February, firefighters discovered irregularities in a fire extinguisher used by a local unit. The device lacked proper certification, and its pressure gauge differed significantly from those of standard manufacturers. Upon further testing, the fire department confirmed it was a non-compliant product. Further investigation revealed that several units had acquired similar "three fire extinguishers," indicating a broader issue.
The investigation led to a fire equipment store located in Diecai Commercial City, where the problematic extinguishers were traced back to Baoerkang Fire Equipment Store. During an unscheduled visit, the store owner claimed to sell fire extinguishers at a significantly lower price than the market rate—less than 50 yuan compared to around 100 yuan for genuine ones. After gathering solid evidence, the fire and police departments conducted a joint operation, seizing over 1.5 million yuan worth of fake and substandard fire-fighting equipment from the store and its warehouse.
According to officials, these counterfeit fire extinguishers pose serious risks. In the event of a fire, they not only fail to suppress the flames but may even worsen the situation. This is due to the use of low-quality materials, such as flour, which compromises their effectiveness. During a recent demonstration, firefighters tested both a genuine and a counterfeit fire extinguisher. When gasoline was ignited in an old drum, the real extinguisher successfully put out the fire in two sprays. In contrast, the counterfeit one failed completely—when the powder was sprayed, the flames actually intensified, highlighting the dangers of using such unsafe products.
Li Xinbing, a fire protection engineer from the city's fire brigade, advised the public on how to identify genuine fire extinguishers. He recommended checking if the pressure gauge matches the technical specifications listed on the device and verifying whether the bottom of the extinguisher bears an official stamp. If either of these elements is missing or inconsistent, the product may be counterfeit. In such cases, he urged consumers to report the issue to the local fire department immediately.
This incident underscores the importance of ensuring the quality of fire-fighting equipment, as substandard products can endanger lives and property. Authorities are continuing their efforts to raise awareness and prevent the circulation of fake fire equipment in the market.
