Guilin seized fake fire extinguisher

The reporter recently uncovered that the Guilin Fire Brigade has seized a fire equipment dealership selling counterfeit and substandard firefighting tools, with an estimated total value of 1.5 million yuan. Some of these unqualified products have already reached the market, prompting the fire department to collaborate with local police in conducting investigations to trace their origins and eliminate potential hazards. During a routine fire safety inspection in February, fire department officials discovered an irregularity in a fire extinguisher used by a company. The device lacked proper certification, and its pressure gauge appeared different from those of standard manufacturers. Further examination confirmed that it was an inferior product. Subsequent investigations revealed that several units had been supplied with "three types of fire extinguishers," suggesting widespread issues. The investigation traced these fake extinguishers back to a store called Baoerkang Fire Equipment Store located in Diecai Commercial City. When fire department officers conducted an unscheduled visit, they were surprised by the store's pricing. While regular fire extinguishers typically cost around 100 yuan, this store sold them for less than 50 yuan. After gathering solid evidence, the fire and public security departments launched a joint operation, resulting in the seizure of approximately 1.5 million yuan worth of counterfeit and substandard fire-fighting equipment from the store and its warehouse. "Substandard fire extinguishers pose a serious threat," said a fire official. "In case of a fire, they not only fail to put out the flames but can even make the situation worse. This is due to the use of low-quality materials, such as flour, which compromises their effectiveness." Earlier that day, firefighters demonstrated the danger of using fake extinguishers. They poured gasoline into an old drum and set it on fire. Using a genuine fire extinguisher, two sprays were enough to put out the fire. In contrast, when a counterfeit one was used, the flames actually intensified, showing just how dangerous these products can be. Li Xinbing, a fire protection engineer with the city’s fire brigade, advised consumers to check for authenticity when purchasing fire extinguishers. First, verify that the pressure gauge matches the technical specifications listed on the device. Second, check the bottom of the extinguisher for a stamp. If either of these elements is missing or inconsistent, the product may be fake. In such cases, individuals are encouraged to report the issue to the fire department immediately. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and quality control in fire safety equipment. Consumers must remain informed and cautious to protect themselves and their communities from the risks posed by counterfeit products.
