In the second half of 2013, thick fog and smog blanketed major cities across China. Masks were everywhere on the streets—people wearing simple face masks, and even some with gas masks, walking briskly through the polluted air. The usual lively atmosphere of the city had dulled; shops that once bustled with customers now seemed quiet, and people moved quickly, as if avoiding the haze. On weekends, when the sky was clear, parks became popular spots for people cycling leisurely. But during the weekdays, a few days of rain and haze made it hard to enjoy the city’s green public bike system.
In the memories of many, China was once a “nation of bicycles.†The “Liberate†brand bikes were common, and during rush hours, the streets were filled with cyclists. However, as cities expanded, work paces quickened, and people's lifestyles changed, riding a bike for daily commutes or travel became less practical and less fashionable. Despite this, many still carry a “bicycle complex†in their hearts—a longing for a simpler, more connected way of life.
In the industrial era, society has advanced rapidly, but progress has also brought challenges like pollution. The smog we now face has forced us to spend less time outdoors and has even made us resent our environment. During spring, when I asked people, “Why not ride a bicycle?†almost everyone had an excuse. Some said they couldn’t because they didn’t own a car, while others claimed they didn’t want to, even if they did have one. The objective reasons often included safety concerns, difficulty finding parking, and poor air quality. But these excuses don’t hold up. Is the air inside a car really better?
As people rushed around with masks and gas masks, it became clear that reviving the culture of cycling could be a positive step toward greener, healthier living. Encouraging people to take up biking again might just be the first step toward a more sustainable future.
