Refined quartz sand comes from different types of rocks, including igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. It contains minimal amounts of impurities like feldspar, mica, clay minerals, and heavy minerals. There are two main types of quartzite: one formed through sedimentary processes, where the grains and cement are not clearly defined, and another formed through high-grade metamorphism, resulting in a purer and denser structure. Vein quartz, on the other hand, is created by hydrothermal activity and consists almost entirely of quartz, with a dense, blocky texture.
The composition of quartz sand varies depending on its source. The primary component is always quartz (SiOâ‚‚), followed by smaller amounts of feldspar, mica, cuttings, heavy minerals, and clay minerals. This variation affects the physical and chemical properties of the sand, influencing its use in different industries.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Quartz sand is known for its hardness, wear resistance, and chemical stability. Its main component is silicon dioxide (SiO₂), which gives it a milky white or clear, translucent appearance. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, it is brittle and lacks cleavage, but exhibits a conchoidal fracture. It has a greasy luster, a density of about 2.65 g/cm³, and a bulk density of 1.60 g/cm³ for particles between 1-20 mesh and 1.50 g/cm³ for 200-200 mesh. It shows anisotropic behavior in terms of thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. It is insoluble in most acids but slightly soluble in potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Its melting point is around 1750°C.
