By stretching or rotating the material, the distance between the particles changes, which alters the wavelength of the reflected light, resulting in a visible color shift. As shown in the video, the material gradually changes color as it stretches, demonstrating its dynamic optical properties. This innovative material has promising applications in mechanical strain sensors, where color changes can indicate stress or movement in structures. It also offers a safer, eco-friendly alternative to toxic dyes used in the textile industry. Not only is it non-toxic and fade-resistant, but it also opens up new possibilities in anti-counterfeiting technology. Its unique properties make it difficult to copy, and its low production cost could one day replace current hologram techniques used on banknotes, reducing fraud. Researchers are now working on developing single-layer polymer opals that can produce different colors in different areas, expanding the material’s potential. They are also seeking partnerships to bring this technology to market.
