Japan's cheap and durable new fuel cell come out

The research team at Kyushu University in Japan has made a breakthrough in fuel cell technology, developing a new, cost-effective, and long-lasting design that they hope will reach practical application within the next five years. This innovation could significantly impact the future of clean energy. Hydrogen fuel cells are currently one of the most promising alternatives to traditional fossil fuels. They generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water and heat in the process—making them an environmentally friendly energy source. However, most existing hydrogen fuel cells require cooling systems, which can lower efficiency and increase complexity. Led by Associate Professor Fujita Tsuyoshi from Kyushu University's Graduate School of Engineering, the team introduced a novel approach by using high-boiling-point phosphoric acid instead of water for cooling. This not only improves thermal stability but also eliminates the need for complex cooling mechanisms. Additionally, they incorporated solid-state phosphoric acid to prevent leaks, ensuring better performance and longer lifespan of the battery. To further enhance durability and reduce costs, the researchers added carbon nanotubes to the fuel cell’s electrode catalyst. These nanotubes are known for their exceptional strength, allowing the battery to last longer while reducing the amount of expensive platinum needed as a catalyst by nearly half. As a result, the production cost of the battery is now about 70% of that of conventional fuel cells. The study, published in *Science Reports*, a newly launched open-access journal under the Nature Publishing Group, highlights a significant step forward in making hydrogen fuel cells more viable for widespread use. The findings have generated excitement in the scientific community, offering a realistic path toward cleaner and more affordable energy solutions. (Reporter: Lan Jianzhong)
