Manz is a global leader in high-tech manufacturing, and with the launch of the VCS 1200 PECVD vertical vacuum coating system, we have officially entered the vacuum coating market. This advanced device is designed for both vertical and frontal coating of crystalline silicon solar cells, primarily used to apply a passivation layer that protects the cell surface. The introduction of this system marks a significant milestone, as it demonstrates our mastery of every critical step in the fully automated production of crystalline silicon solar cells. Moreover, we now offer integrated solutions that help customers optimize their production processes, improve efficiency, and reduce both investment and operational costs.
The VCS 1200 PECVD stands out due to its exceptional passivation performance, particularly with silicon nitride and aluminum oxide layers. Unlike traditional multi-layer stacks, it can produce these layers in a single process step. The use of a high-efficiency plasma source ensures not only superior passivation but also stable and consistent coating results. Additionally, the innovative Manz Coating Carrier System, combined with vertical cell positioning, eliminates shading or pinning issues commonly caused by mechanical positioning methods used by other manufacturers. This design enhances the uniformity of the coating on the cell surface, minimizes defects, and prevents unwanted particle deposition during the process. These features contribute significantly to cost reduction and enable the production of next-generation high-efficiency solar cells with greater profitability.
Technology Drives Efficiency
The back-side passivation process in PERC solar cells typically involves three main steps. First, a wet chemical process polishes one side of the cell. Then, a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition system is used to deposit an aluminum oxide and silicon nitride layer. Finally, a laser opens the insulating stack to create local contact with the rear of the cell. Our VCS 1200 PECVD uses aluminum oxide for the back-side passivation layer, offering two key advantages: it reflects long-wavelength light back into the cell, improving photoelectric conversion efficiency, and it extends the lifetime of charge carriers within the cell, boosting both current and voltage. As a result, our technology covers all essential steps in the process and is the only equipment supplier capable of helping customers achieve meaningful efficiency improvements.
Boost Profits for Existing Lines
The VCS 1200 vacuum coating system was developed by Manz Coating GmbH, established in 2010. It has a throughput of up to 1,200 units per hour and seamlessly integrates with existing production lines. According to General Manager Mathias Höfler, “Our ability to quickly bring this system to market was made possible by hiring 50 highly specialized engineers in Karlstein, combining their expertise to deliver a powerful solution.†With the VCS 1200, we now provide equipment for every crucial process step in crystalline silicon solar cell production.
The VCS 1200’s compatibility with existing systems offers battery manufacturers a valuable opportunity to increase revenue. Dieter Manz, founder and CEO, added, “Everyone recognizes the challenge facing the solar industry: reducing the cost per watt for all battery manufacturers. PECVD is a perfect solution that helps customers further cut down on investment and operating expenses.†With this technology, we are helping the industry move toward more efficient and cost-effective solar energy production.
