There are six main types of substrates used in plating, each designed for different applications and environmental conditions. Understanding these categories can help in selecting the right material for your project.
1) Galvanized Steel Sheets
Galvanized steel sheets feature a double-sided coating ranging from 75 to 700 g/m², as tested by the ASTM three-point method. In construction, Z275 and Z450 are the most commonly used grades. Z275 has a minimum single-side coating of 275 g/m², which is approximately 19 μm thick, while Z450 offers a higher coating weight of 450 g/m², providing enhanced durability.
2) Aluminized Steel Sheets
Two primary types of aluminized steel sheets are used in construction:
(1) For high-heat environments: These sheets have a metal coating containing 5–11% silicon. The aluminum layer is thin, weighing only 120 g/m², with a minimum thickness of 20 μm on one side.
(2) For corrosive environments: Most of the coating is aluminum, making it thicker—approximately 200 g/m²—with a minimum single-side thickness of 31 μm. This type offers excellent corrosion resistance in harsh conditions.
3) Aluminized Zinc Plate (also known as Galvalume)
This type of sheet is a double-sided hot-dip galvanized product, meeting ASTM A792 Grade Class 80 or AS1397 G550 standards, with a tensile strength of 5600 kg/cm². The coating consists of 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc, and 1.5% silicon. It combines the long-term corrosion resistance of aluminum, the edge protection of zinc, and the uniformity provided by silicon. The three-point test weights for the double-sided coating include 150, 165, and 189 g/m². AZ150 is the most commonly used grade in construction, with a coating weight of 150 g/m² and a minimum single-side thickness of 20 μm.
4) Galvanized Aluminum Steel
This is a double-sided hot-dip coated steel sheet containing a mixture of 5% zinc, aluminum, and rare earth elements. The three-point test shows double-sided coating weights ranging from 100 to 450 g/m², offering good corrosion resistance and flexibility in various applications.
5) Galvanized Alloyed Steel Sheets
These are hot-dip galvanized steel sheets that undergo heat treatment to convert the pure zinc coating into a Zn-Fe alloy layer. The conversion coating weight, calculated based on zinc, can reach up to 180 g/m², providing improved adhesion and durability.
6) Electrogalvanized Steel Sheets
Electrogalvanized steel sheets are coated with a pure zinc layer using an electroplating process. They typically have a maximum coating weight of 180 g/m² on both sides. However, they are generally not suitable for outdoor use due to their limited weather resistance.
The most common materials used in building roofing and curtain walls are colored galvanized steel and pre-painted galvanized steel, which offer both aesthetic appeal and long-lasting performance.
