Recently, Soitec SA, based in Bernin, France, unveiled a groundbreaking advancement in solar technology by launching the world's first four-junction photovoltaic cell. This innovation was developed in collaboration with Fraunhofer ISE, located in Freiburg, Germany, which confirmed that the new cell achieved an impressive conversion efficiency of 43.6%. This milestone represents a significant leap forward in solar energy performance.
According to Soitec, the four-junction cell achieves this remarkable efficiency when exposed to a solar concentration of 319 times. The company also noted that under concentrations ranging from 250 to 500 times, the efficiency of the cell would surpass 43%. Soitec anticipates that this four-junction technology will outperform existing three-junction cells, marking a major breakthrough in the field.
Soitec CEO André-Jacques Auberton-Hervé commented, “This efficiency gain is a crucial step beyond traditional photovoltaic economics. This achievement brings substantial value to our solar energy sector and validates our long-term strategy and business model in the solar market.â€
He added, “Working closely with two of the world’s leading research institutions—Fraunhofer ISE and CEA-Leti—we have made rapid progress. Looking ahead, we aim to further expand this concept and hope to reach a 50% conversion efficiency in solar cells by 2015.â€
The four-junction design incorporates two dual-junction subcells, each optimized for different parts of the solar spectrum. These subcells are grown on a separate III-V compound semiconductor structure, allowing for a broader capture of sunlight. Soitec’s patented semiconductor bonding and layer transfer technology, which has been widely used in the semiconductor industry for years, was instrumental in developing this advanced cell.
This project was a collaborative effort between Soitec, Fraunhofer ISE, the Helmholtz Center for Materials and Energy, and CEA-Leti in Grenoble, France. The combined expertise of these institutions has helped push the boundaries of photovoltaic technology, setting the stage for future advancements in renewable energy solutions.
