The national standard for "Wooden Doors and Windows" (GB/T 29498-2013) was proposed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and officially reviewed by the National Quality Inspection on May 7, 2013. The General Administration and the National Standards Committee approved its release, with implementation beginning on December 1, 2013. This marked a significant milestone as it became the first national standard specifically tailored for China's wooden doors and windows industry.
To ensure smooth adoption of the new standard, the National Building Curtain Wall and Door and Window Standardization Technical Committee, in collaboration with the China Construction Metal Structure Association and Beijing Construction Wood Co., Ltd., organized a series of training sessions and technical exchanges. The first event took place during the Shenyang Furniture Fair from August 9 to 10, 2013.
The training program focused on key aspects such as analyzing the content of GB/T 29498-2013, explaining major testing methods for wooden doors and windows, addressing challenges during implementation, and providing direct interaction with standard development experts. On August 9, a detailed training session was held, followed by an official examination on August 10. Participants who passed the exam received certificates, which were registered with the National Standardization Technical Committee for Building Curtain Walls and Windows. These certificates could be used as proof of compliance when bidding for projects.
China’s door industry has grown over the past 30 years, evolving into a well-established sector. International expansion is now a natural direction for its development. However, the industry still lacks multinational companies. This is largely due to the need for internationalization in production factors, branding, product development, and global operations. A key prerequisite for this is having strict production standards.
While there are numerous industry and enterprise-level standards in place, none have managed to unify the entire sector. Currently, China’s door industry is in the second phase of internationalization, showing strong growth potential. The introduction of this national standard addresses many of these challenges. It not only promotes standardization within the industry but also opens up more opportunities for Chinese door manufacturers to compete globally. With a solid foundation in quality and consistency, the industry is now better positioned to expand internationally and reach a wider audience around the world.
