Wang Yang: The market economy needs to strengthen the role of industry associations

**Abstract**: Wang Yang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee, recently visited the Guangdong Food Industry Association to conduct an in-depth investigation. During the visit, he emphasized that as the reform of the socialist market economy continues to advance, the role of industry associations will become increasingly important. He called for effective solutions to the challenges currently facing trade associations and chambers of commerce, while strongly advocating for their healthy and sustainable development. Wang Yang stressed that industry associations should fully leverage their positive roles in supporting businesses, facilitating communication between the government and enterprises, and promoting reforms in administrative management systems. By enhancing their capacity to manage the market economy, these organizations can contribute significantly to balanced economic and social progress. In developed market economies, where private enterprises are numerous and competition is intense, industry associations play a crucial role in mediating relationships among businesses and acting as a channel for them to express concerns and needs to the government. At the same time, the government relies on these associations to gather feedback from the business community and better understand the needs of the market. This mutual relationship has led to the emergence of industry associations as essential players in the economic landscape. An industry association is a social intermediary organization that operates between the government, enterprises, and commodity producers. It serves as a platform for services, consulting, communication, supervision, impartiality, self-regulation, and coordination. As a non-governmental organization, it is not part of the official administrative system and functions as a bridge connecting the government with the business sector. In China, trade associations are recognized as corporate legal entities under the "Civil Code" and are considered part of civil society. Internationally, they are often referred to as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or non-profit organizations, playing a vital role in fostering collaboration, transparency, and accountability in the business environment.
