Proper care of Begonias involves careful management of water and fertilizer throughout the seasons. The watering rule is "more in spring and autumn, less in summer and winter." During spring and autumn, when the plant is actively growing and flowering, keep the soil slightly moist. In summer and winter, which are semi-dormant or dormant periods, reduce watering so that the soil remains slightly dry. Especially in winter, avoid overwatering—keep it as dry as possible. Watering times should also vary by season. In winter, water in the morning before the sun gets too strong. In summer, water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize temperature differences between the soil and the environment, which helps the plant grow better. The general principle is "don’t let the soil dry out completely, but don’t overwater either."
During the growing season, apply a diluted organic fertilizer every 10 to 15 days. You can use fermented bean cake water, rapeseed cake water, or diluted chicken manure and human urine. Always follow the "thin fertilizer, frequent application" rule. Over-concentrated or improperly fermented fertilizers can burn the roots, cause leaf scorching, and even kill the plant. After applying fertilizer, mist the leaves with water to prevent fertilizer residue from sticking to them, which could lead to yellowing. In summer and winter, when growth slows down, reduce or stop fertilizing to prevent root rot caused by soft stems and weakened cold resistance.
Another important aspect of Begonia care is pruning. Similar to jasmine and roses, remove spent flowers and cut back the center shoots after blooming to encourage more branching and flowering. Neglecting this step can result in leggy growth, an unattractive shape, and fewer blooms.
After the Qingming Festival (around April 4th), you can move potted Begonias outdoors to a shaded area. In East China, they should be kept in shade from April to October, but allow some morning and evening sunlight. If leaves curl or show brown spots, it may be a sign of sunburn. When frost arrives, bring the plants indoors to protect them from freezing. Place them in a sunny indoor location. If the room temperature stays above 15°C, the plant can continue blooming if given a top dressing.Ceramic Seal
