Proper care of Begonias involves careful water and fertilizer management throughout the seasons. The watering rule is “more in spring and autumn, less in summer and winter.” During spring and autumn, when the plant is actively growing and flowering, it needs more frequent watering to keep the soil slightly moist. In summer and winter, when the plant enters a semi-dormant or dormant state, watering should be reduced, allowing the soil to dry slightly. Especially in winter, it’s important to keep the soil as dry as possible to avoid root rot.

Watering times also vary by season. In winter, it's best to water in the morning before the sun rises, while in summer, watering should be done early in the morning or late in the evening. This helps reduce temperature differences between the water and the soil, which is better for the plant’s health. The general rule for watering is “don’t let it dry out completely, but don’t overwater either.”

During the growing season, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer every 10 to 15 days. You can use fermented bean cake water, rapeseed cake water, or compost from chicken, pigeon manure, or human urine. However, always follow the principle of “use small amounts frequently.” If the fertilizer is too strong or not fully fermented, it may burn the roots, causing leaf discoloration and even plant death. After fertilizing, mist the leaves with water to prevent fertilizer residue from sticking to them and causing yellow spots.

In summer and winter, when growth slows down, reduce or stop fertilization to prevent damage from soft stems and leaves, which are more sensitive to temperature changes.

Another important aspect of Begonia care is pruning, or “topping.” Like jasmine and roses, it’s essential to remove spent flowers and pinch back the tips to encourage bushier growth and more blooms. Neglecting this step can lead to leggy plants with poor shape and fewer flowers.

After Qingming (a traditional Chinese solar term), you can move potted Begonias outdoors into shaded areas. In East China, they should remain in shade from April to October, though some morning and evening sunlight is beneficial. If the leaves curl or show brown spots, it may be a sign of sunburn. When frost arrives, bring the plants indoors to protect them from freezing. Keep them in a sunny spot, and if the indoor temperature stays above 15°C, they may continue blooming after being fed with top dressing.

With proper attention to watering, feeding, pruning, and environmental conditions, your Begonias will thrive and reward you with beautiful blooms year after year.
