In the corn field of Wangguizhuang Village, Wadian Township, Anyang County, on the morning of June 28th, a field classroom attracted dozens of farmers eager to learn. The topic of the day was pest control in summer corn. “After the emergence of corn, it needs strengthening. Everyone should pay attention. The leaves of this corn have been damaged, which is clearly caused by corn borers and sticky insects. To manage these pests effectively, choosing the right pesticide is key. For synthetic pesticides, spraying must be done before 10 am or after 5 pm, as this is when larvae are most active,†explained an agricultural expert.
The county has taken proactive steps to bring knowledge directly to the fields. Agricultural technicians are now visiting farms, offering hands-on guidance and face-to-face support. In addition, the county has distributed cards with the names, expertise, and contact numbers of local agricultural staff. If farmers encounter any challenges, they can simply call for immediate assistance from experts who will arrive on-site quickly.
“This is like raising a crop with care. Without scientific management, it’s hard to ensure a good harvest. Regular training for farmers is essential, but we also need to be present on the ground every day to provide real-time guidance,†said Zhang Yanqing, director of the Agriculture Bureau.
As the session continued, the phone in Yanzhen’s bag rang. “Is that the stationmaster? This is Yang Daogang from Yangqi Village. When are you coming to our village for the lecture? The villagers are waiting in the field,†he asked excitedly. Yanzhen confirmed that the team had already scheduled a visit two days earlier to discuss summer corn management techniques.
“Seeds are planted on the ground, and proper management begins immediately. Farmers may not know when to apply fertilizer or what kind of medicine to use. If they rely only on intuition, yields will suffer. But with science and technology, we can tap into production potential at every stage, making better use of resources and increasing output,†she explained.
Zhang Erhong, a large-scale grain farmer, shared his experience: “This year, through land transfer, I planted 300 acres of corn. Thanks to government policies and the regular training provided by experts, we’re now able to grow more food efficiently.â€
Another villager, Zhang Haiwang, added, “I used to think that more fertilizer meant better crops. But after listening to the experts, I realized that it's not about quantity—it's about using the right methods.â€
With proper technical support, the yield per mu is expected to exceed last year’s results. “Corn and smart summer management can significantly boost production. As long as we maintain good practices, we’re confident in achieving higher yields this season,†Zhang Erhong said confidently.
Anyang County currently has 876,000 mu of corn and 40,000 mu of cotton under cultivation. So far, the county has applied fertilizer to 350,000 mu and irrigated 650,000 mu, demonstrating its commitment to modern agricultural practices.
