Corn Qiao Xia can increase production after autumn

In the corn fields of Wangguizhuang Village, Wadian Township, Anyang County, on the morning of June 28th, an open-air classroom attracted dozens of farmers. The topic of discussion was about pest control in summer corn. "After the emergence of corn, it needs strengthening. Everyone should pay attention. The leaves of this corn have been eaten, which is clearly caused by corn borers and sticky insects. To manage these pests, choosing the right pesticide is crucial. For synthetic pesticides, the best time to spray is before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m., as this is when larvae are most active," explained an agricultural technician. The county's agricultural technology station manager, Yan Zhenzhen, emphasized the importance of proper management during the summer season. "The key to managing summer corn is to ensure strong roots, flat stems, broad leaves, healthy plants, and a uniform stand. If there's no fertilization, it's important to catch seedlings early and promote their growth. Farmers should observe the sky, the ground, and the seedlings, and adjust their practices accordingly." Over the past few days, Anyang County has brought agricultural experts directly into the fields, offering hands-on training and guidance. In addition, the county has issued cards with the names, expertise, and contact numbers of agricultural technicians. Farmers can call for immediate assistance if they face any challenges in their farming activities. "Managing crops is like carrying a doll—it requires careful attention and scientific methods. Without relying on technology, it's hard to achieve a good harvest. Alongside regular training, experts also visit the fields daily to provide on-the-ground support," said Zhang Yanqing, director of the Agriculture Bureau. As Yan Zhenzhen was giving her lecture, her phone rang. It was Yang Daogang, a villager from Yangqi Village, asking when the experts would be coming to their village for a session on summer corn management. "The villagers are waiting on the field," he added. Yan Zhenzhen confirmed that an appointment had been made two days earlier for an expert session in the village. As she continued her lecture, she highlighted the importance of following scientific methods. "Seeds are planted on the ground, and management begins immediately. When to apply fertilizer and what kind of pesticide to use—farmers may not always know. If they rely on intuition rather than science, yields will suffer. By using technology and optimizing every step, we can boost production while making better use of resources." Zhang Erhong, a large-scale grain farmer, shared his experience: "This year, through land transfer, I planted 300 acres of corn. Thanks to government policies and the frequent visits from agricultural experts, farmers are now able to produce more with less effort." The atmosphere was lively, with farmers actively engaging in discussions. Zhang Haiwang, another local farmer, expressed his excitement: "I used to think that more fertilizer meant better crops. But after listening to the experts, I realized that it's not about quantity, but about using the right techniques." Zhang Erhong added confidently, "With proper technical management, the yield per mu this year will definitely exceed last year’s." Anyang County currently has 876,000 mu of corn fields and 40,000 mu of cotton fields. So far, the county has applied fertilizer to 350,000 mu and irrigated 650,000 mu. This proactive approach reflects the county's commitment to improving agricultural productivity through science and education.
