Device Knowledge of Large Motor Bearing Housing
When installing the anchor bolts for a motor's base plate, it is essential to clean them using solvents like gasoline. Check the threads for any damage or deformation and perform a test with the nut. Measure the depth of the screw hole and ensure the bolt length is appropriate. The anchor plate should be tightly attached to the base, and the anchor bolts must be aligned straight with the plate.
The most common type of foot screw is the double-ended bolt, which offers ease of installation. There is also a T-shaped bolt, where the screw is inserted from the top into the anchor plate’s hole and then rotated 90 degrees to lock in place. Before tightening, apply lubricant to the threads to ensure smooth operation and reduce wear.
The base plate of a large motor is typically made of steel plates welded together or constructed using I-beams and channel steel. These base plates can either be a single unit or composed of multiple sections. Their primary function is to support the motor and transfer both static and dynamic loads to the foundation. They also help maintain the correct alignment and spacing between the motor and other connected equipment.
Before installing the base plate, remove any oil or rust paint, especially at the points where cement is applied. Use a paint remover and steel brush to clean the area thoroughly, then wipe it with a cloth. For better adhesion, you can apply a layer of cement slurry beforehand.
During the cleaning process, be careful not to scratch or damage the bearing housing surface or the stator base. If any imperfections are found, use sandpaper and enamel to repair them. For new installations, the foundation must be solid and capable of withstanding both static and dynamic loads without sinking. To prevent settling, preloading is often used—typically 1.5 to 2.5 times the weight of the motor. During preloading, continuously monitor the elevation and check for any settlement before final installation.
For example, when installing a 1150 kW motor in a steel plant, the base is preloaded with a weight approximately twice the motor's total weight. After 48 hours, the base may settle by about 2 mm, which is acceptable as long as it stabilizes before final assembly.
