Device Knowledge of Large Motor Bearing Housing
When installing the anchor bolts for a motor's base plate, it is essential to clean them thoroughly with solvents like gasoline. Check the threads for any damage or deformation and perform a test using a nut. Measure the length of the bolt hole and ensure the bolt length is appropriate. The anchor plate should be tightly attached to the base, and the anchor bolt must remain straight and aligned with the plate.
The most commonly used anchor bolt is the double-ended bolt, which simplifies installation. There are also T-shaped bolts, where the screw is inserted from the top into the through-hole on the anchor plate. After inserting, rotate the bolt 90 degrees to lock it in place. Before tightening, apply lubricant to the threads to ensure smooth operation and prevent galling.
The base plate of a large motor is typically made of welded steel plates or constructed using I-beams and channel sections. Some designs use individual blocks instead of a single unit. These structures serve to support the motor and transfer both static and dynamic loads to the foundation. They also help maintain proper alignment between the motor and other connected equipment.
Before installing the base plate, remove all oil and anti-rust coatings. Pay special attention to areas where cement is applied. Use a paint remover and steel brush to clean the surface, then wipe it with a cloth. For better adhesion, applying a layer of cement slurry before installation is recommended.
During the cleaning process, avoid scratching or rusting the bearing housing and stator base surfaces. If any damage is found, use sandpaper and enamel to repair the affected areas. For newly installed base plates, the foundation must be solid and stable under both static and dynamic loads. To prevent settling, preloading is often required. The preloading weight is usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the weight of the motor assembly.
Throughout the preloading process, monitor the elevation continuously and check for any signs of sinking. The motor can only be mounted once the base has stabilized. For example, when installing a 1150 kW motor at a steel plant, the base was preloaded with a weight twice the motor’s total weight. After 48 hours, the settlement was measured at 2 mm, confirming the stability of the foundation.
