Green garlic cultivation technology

Fine soil preparation is essential for growing garlic in sandy soils that are deep, fertile, loose, and well-drained. Before planting, apply 1,000 to 1,500 kg of manure per acre, along with 50 kg of fertilizer. Deep plowing is recommended to ensure good root development. The planting beds should be 2 meters wide. Planting should take place between mid-August and mid-September, depending on market demand. Choose varieties like Chengdu, Ershui, or Jiading, which have white skin. Select cloves of similar size and space them 12 cm apart, with a depth of 3 to 4 cm. The sowing rate is about 250 kg per acre. Larger cloves can be planted individually, while smaller ones can be broadcast. After sowing, cover the seeds with ash or mud to protect them. After the seedlings emerge, field management includes applying 1,500 to 2,000 kg of livestock manure per acre, along with 5 kg of urea. Before December, apply manure 12 times based on plant growth. When the seedlings reach 10 cm in height, perform deep cultivation. At 30 cm, combine cultivation with weeding. Ensure proper drainage during rainy or snowy periods, and water regularly during dry spells. Common pests and diseases include gray mold, leaf blight, and stem rot. For gray mold, use a solution of 40% thiophanate at a dilution of 800 to 1,000 times. For stem rot, spray the plants with the same solution. Garlic thrips are a major pest; treat them using 50% phoxim at a rate of 1 kg per acre mixed with water. Harvesting typically occurs in November, with the final harvest taking place in February. The average yield is around 2,000 kg per acre. Proper care throughout the growing season ensures high-quality garlic production and maximizes yield. By following these practices, farmers can achieve better results and meet market demands effectively.
