During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the building materials industry in Jiangsu Province is expected to achieve more sustainable and realistic development. A new phase of progress should be taken in the production and application of green and advanced building materials.
Following the achievements made during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," Jiangsu's new wall materials sector has been leading nationally. In 2012, the total output of wall materials in the province reached 52 billion units, with 85% being new wall materials. Cities like Xuzhou and Wuxi achieved a remarkable 97% adoption rate, ranking first in the province. This progress contributed significantly to energy conservation, with 2.55 million tons of energy saved, 21 million tons of industrial waste recycled, and a reduction of 63,700 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions. These efforts brought substantial economic and environmental benefits. Local governments also supported structural adjustments, completing 122 projects for new wall material construction and technological upgrades, increasing production capacity by 7.18 billion units. This helped establish large-scale, low-pollution enterprises that offer high-quality products, laying a solid foundation for the growth of the energy-saving construction industry in Jiangsu.
In 2012, there were notable improvements in the building materials sector across Jiangsu. Investment in the industry reached 69.026 billion yuan, up 8.11% compared to the previous year. Particularly, investments in new materials such as waterproofing, thermal insulation, soundproofing, asbestos cement, glass fiber, and lightweight construction materials saw significant growth—up 106.75%, 164.20%, 403.20%, 62.04%, and 101.22% respectively. Meanwhile, investments in traditional sectors like cement and glass declined sharply, showing meaningful progress in the industry's restructuring.
Xu Xue, an official from the Jiangsu Provincial Construction and Engineering Bureau, emphasized that the development of green buildings cannot be separated from green building materials. Energy efficiency relies on thermal insulation materials, while wood-based applications depend on wood-plastic composites and chemical building materials. Water conservation is closely tied to membrane filtration and plastic piping systems. He encouraged local building materials companies to focus more on the construction industry, aligning their strategies with goals such as water, energy, land, and material conservation. They should also adapt to the integration of intelligent design and construction, steel structure construction, curtain wall systems, and building decoration practices.
Since the release of the "Green Building Action Plan," the government has actively promoted energy-efficient building renovations and the development of eco-friendly materials. Policies restricting the use of clay products in urban areas and banning solid clay bricks have driven companies to shift toward new wall materials.
