On June 18, 2013, Solar Frontier announced a major breakthrough in its photovoltaic technology. The company reported that the conversion efficiency of its CIS (Copper Indium Selenide) solar cell modules produced at its Guofu plant in Miyazaki, Japan, has reached an impressive 14.6%. Alongside this achievement, the maximum output power of these modules hit 179.8W. These results are comparable to those of polycrystalline silicon solar panels, highlighting the growing competitiveness of thin-film technology.
The Guofu Plant is Solar Frontier’s primary manufacturing facility, which started commercial production in February 2011. With an annual capacity of around 900MW, the plant has continuously worked on improving the efficiency of its modules through ongoing research and development. This latest milestone marks the highest conversion efficiency achieved so far at the Guofu site, with the modules measuring 977mm × 1257mm × 35mm in size.
In addition to its module achievements, Solar Frontier also made headlines for its performance in smaller-scale solar cells. The company achieved a world-leading conversion efficiency of 17.8% in 30cm² CIS sub-modules. Furthermore, it reached an impressive 19.7% efficiency in small units of approximately 0.5cm², all without using cadmium, which is a significant step forward in environmentally friendly solar technology.
These advancements not only showcase Solar Frontier’s commitment to innovation but also underline the potential of CIS-based thin-film solar cells in the global renewable energy market. As the demand for clean energy continues to rise, such progress plays a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable power solutions.
