Suspected screws are loose, risk Hong Kong public hospitals disable gamma scanners

GE Healthcare provides gamma-ray scanner systems used in six public hospitals. It has been reported that the screws within these systems may loosen, potentially causing harm to patients. As a precaution, the systems are being temporarily suspended until further inspection is conducted. Some non-emergency patients who require bone, myocardial, or thyroid scans have had their appointments affected or delayed, and rescheduling is currently under review. The gamma-ray scanner is primarily used for imaging bones, the heart, and the thyroid gland. These systems are currently in operation at six public hospitals, including Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, and North District Hospital. According to the Hospital Authority (HA), they were notified by the supplier the previous day about a potential risk with the screw assembly in the scanner. While the HA believes that the main components are not affected, they have decided to suspend the use of the system as a safety measure. The system will remain offline until the supplier completes an inspection and confirms that it is safe to resume operations. Patients are advised to contact their respective hospitals for updates on their scheduled procedures.
