Suspected screws are loose, risk Hong Kong public hospitals disable gamma scanners

GE Healthcare has issued a warning regarding its gamma-ray scanner systems used in six public hospitals. It is suspected that certain screws within the equipment may loosen during operation, potentially causing harm to patients. As a precaution, the systems must be immediately taken out of service. Some non-emergency patients who were scheduled for bone scans, myocardial imaging, or thyroid examinations have had their appointments disrupted, and new dates will need to be arranged. The gamma-ray scanner is primarily used for imaging bones, the heart, and the thyroid gland. Currently, six public hospitals in Hong Kong are using this technology, including Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, and North District Hospital. According to the Hospital Authority (HA), they received a notice from the supplier the previous day regarding the potential risk of screw loosening. Although the HA believes the main components of the system are not affected, they have decided to temporarily suspend the use of the scanners as a safety measure. The systems will remain offline until the supplier conducts an inspection and confirms that all issues are resolved. Once the inspection is complete and the system is deemed safe, it will be reactivated for patient use. This incident highlights the importance of regular maintenance and prompt response to potential safety concerns in medical equipment. Patients affected by the suspension are being informed individually, and alternative arrangements are being made where possible. The HA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as needed.
