On December 29, 2013, during lunchtime at the first station of the Third District in the No. 3 Oil Production Plant of Dagang Oilfield, workers were gathered around a table, eating rice and sharing stories about safety helmets. The conversation began when Li Qingli, a worker from the well site, was still wearing her hard hat.
“Li sister, you’re still wearing that helmet? Can’t you take it off?†someone asked with a smile.
“I just came back from the well and forgot to take it off,†she replied, laughing.
“Back when we first started requiring helmets, you used to complain it was too heavy. Now you’re fine with it,†another colleague added.
“It’s funny how after using it for a while, I don’t even feel its weight anymore. It’s actually quite comfortable. You know, two days ago when I was changing the wellhead oil, I forgot to close the valve above me and lifted my head. When I hit the valve, I thought to myself—thank goodness I was wearing a helmet or I might have been seriously hurt.â€
As the discussion continued, Xie Chunfeng shared his own experience: “At first, I didn’t like wearing the helmet. It felt awkward and heavy on my head. But over time, I realized how important it was. I stopped resisting and now, before heading out to the well, putting on the helmet is the first thing I do.â€
Huang Dehui, a pipe worker with over 20 years of experience, agreed: “I’ve gotten used to wearing it every day. If I go out without it, I feel uneasy. It’s become a habit.â€
Guan Zigong and Qi Dan joined in, adding, “We’ve developed a culture where everyone takes responsibility for safety. Through activities like standardized operations and safety awareness campaigns, we’ve all come to understand the importance of proper protective gear. Wearing a helmet isn’t just a rule—it’s the key to staying safe.â€
The group laughed and nodded in agreement. “Never get used to not wearing a helmet,†one said. “That’s how you stay safe.â€
And with that, the crew left the table, already thinking about their next task—and making sure their helmets were on.
