First, the Simple Production of Gas Masks
A basic gas mask can be constructed using a transparent plastic bag as the face cover and a filter canister filled with filtration materials. The process involves several key steps:
Step 1: Gathering Materials
1. Filtration Material: You can use limestone particles, activated carbon, or charcoal. For limestone, mix quicklime and clay in equal parts, add water to form a block, dry it, crush it into 1mm pieces, and soak them in an alkaline solution like soap water or baking soda. After soaking, remove and dry them. Activated carbon is also effective for filtering harmful substances.
2. Smoke Filter Material: Sawdust (0.6–1.2 mm), cotton, foam sponge, or similar materials can be used to help trap particulates.
3. Mask Cover: A transparent plastic bag that is strong, soft, and airtight is ideal. Alternatively, you can use materials like bamboo or metal cans if needed.
4. Sealing Material: Use tape, wire, elastic bands, cotton, or rubber cloth to ensure a tight seal around the face.
Step 2: Assembly
Use a plastic sheet, artificial leather, or rubber cloth as the mask body. Cut it according to the dimensions shown in Figure 10-2 and attach an elastic headband. Secure the mask tightly over the face, connect it to the filter canister, and fix it with tape. Add two securing strips to keep the mask stable during use.
Second, the Production of Anti-Virus Masks
1. Fill the respirator with activated carbon, crushed lime, sawdust, charcoal, or cotton. Use gauze or a towel to make the mask and sew it. Leave 30–50 cm openings at both ends to create a headband.
2. Dipping masks can be made by soaking fabric in a weak lye or soapy water solution. After wringing out the excess liquid, ensure the mask is airtight by adding a pressure strip or layers of cotton or gauze near the nose area.
3. Wire frame masks can be made using a thick wire shaped to fit your face. Soak a thick cotton fabric in a baking soda solution, slightly dry it, place it on your face, and cover it with a dry cloth. Then insert it into the wire frame and secure it with a band to improve protection.
Third, the Use of Simple Gas Masks
Simple gas masks include filters, canisters, eye protection, and face masks. Proper usage is essential:
1. Airtightness is crucial when wearing a gas mask. Poor sealing reduces its effectiveness. Make sure the mask fits tightly and avoid unnecessary movement while wearing it.
2. To prevent skin irritation, place a clean, soft cloth inside the mask. Adding a layer of cotton or a handkerchief can also help prevent direct contact with the filter material.
3. Keep the mask moist by soaking and squeezing it before use. Store it in a sealed plastic bag and use it within 10 hours for best results.
Training Content
1. Inspect the airtightness of the mask, check the tightness of the straps, and ensure the size is suitable. Report any issues found.
2. Practice wearing the mask and run 50 meters to test comfort and effectiveness. Different types of homemade masks, such as dipped masks or canister masks, can be used.
3. Learn how to properly remove the mask without exposing yourself to contaminants. Always store protective gear in a bag after removal.
Evaluation of Training Effects
1. Good airtightness and strong virus isolation ability.
2. Secure straps that stay in place during physical activity.
3. Proper equipment setup and correct wearing procedures.
