Die Steel Annealing and Normalizing Selection

The annealing and normalizing of the die steel have a direct relationship with the hardness and machinability of the material. The selection of annealing and normalizing should be based on the consideration of the type of die steel, the cooling process, the use performance of the die, and the economy.

1. When the die steel is low-carbon steel with carbon content less than 0.25%, normalizing is usually used instead of annealing. Because the faster cooling rate can prevent the low-carbon steel to precipitate the free tertiary carbon leakage along the grain boundary, thus improving the cold deformation performance of the stamping die; normalizing can improve the hardness of the die steel. 2. When the die steel is a medium carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.25% to 0.50%, normalizing can also be used instead of annealing. Although the hardness of the carbon steel after normalizing is higher than that of the limited carbon steel, it is still able to carry out cutting processing. Low fire costs and high productivity.

3. When the die steel is a steel with a carbon content between 0.50% and 0.70%, the hardness after normalizing is significantly higher than that after annealing because of the high carbon content. It is difficult to perform cutting processing. Therefore, the full annealing is generally used to reduce the die steel. Hardness, improve cutting workability.

4. When the die steel is a high-carbon steel or tool steel with a carbon content of more than 0.75%, the spheroidizing annealing is generally used as a preliminary heat treatment, and if the mesh-like secondary cementite exists, the normalizing is to be eliminated first.
